So, this was the situation at Casa Crafts on Sea last Friday.
Me: I’m making a sausage casserole for dinner
Beloved husband: Argh! Stop making me eat food that you’re really just making for Jacob! It’s Friday! I don’t want an effing casserole I want a kebab!
Me: Oh.
Admittedly my response was less polite than ‘oh’, but you get the idea. The sausage casserole was suggested to me by my friend Jodie who also has a fussy toddler when it comes to food (although predictably will eat anything round the childminder’s). My reasoning on making this for dinner was therefore a) If Jodie’s daughter will eat it, surely my son will eat it b) my son apparently LOVES sausage casserole when my childminder makes it for him c) I can make it hours in advance in the slow cooker and therefore once the small person is in bed I can put my feet up. Post-baby I may not being going out loads at the weekend but cooking on a Friday night is not my idea of a good time.
So I made it anyway. This is Jodie’s recipe and instructions, although obviously due to the whole Friday night issue I did it in a slow cooker.
You can add any other veggies that you like – I have added mushrooms, courgettes, corn, peas etc
Place all the ingredients in a large casserole dish and stir…
Put in the oven 180 (is that gas make 5?? not sure) for an hour.
Serve with rice, mashed potatoes, chips or just fresh bread – YUMMY
I used mushrooms and courgettes, didn’t add any salt (as I’m a bit obsessive about salt levels) and changed the bisto for a reduced salt stock cube because I don’t own any gravy stuff.
And the result? (Big drum roll please…) Jacob wouldn’t touch it. Not sat in his high chair. Not in front of cbeebies while I tried to sneak it into him. Not even when I explained that, y’know this is for my blog and Jodie might get upset and stuff. Not a sausage. Meh.
So Jacob went to bed with no tea which meant that later that night John and I were left with the leftovers, and, more worryingly, no kebab. And the result?
Husband loved it!! Apparently it was ‘even nicer than a kebab’ and while the mists of time may have clouded my memory on this one a little bit, I’m sure I remember him saying that he was wrong! Imagine!
So that’s one of the males in the Crafts on Sea household happy. Any of you care to help me out in my quest to get some food in my boy’s belly?!
If you have a child that eats the food you make then please email it to me! I’m over at craftsonsea@gmail.com

Sausage Casserole is my proper, proper favouritestist meal of all time.
I use lots of herbs (generic pack of “mixed herbs” is fine) and sometimes add cooked bacon chopped up to it.
Sometimes I do all sausage and tomato, other times sausages and beans and sometimes both. Sometimes I live on the edge and add a bit of garlic and chilli (for the non small person version).
Worcester sauce is good in it too. And/or mustard, depending on whether there’s a small person involved.
I’m going to have to do a blog on pimping your sausage casserole at this rate ;o)
Thank you very much for linking this up on Domestic Disgrace. I love the sound of this- looks delicious. Now, be patient with me when I say I’m going to look up how to chop an onion… x
When I first started going out with the husband he had to teach me how to cook bacon, in my defence I’m an ex-veggie but still…
